Real value, not the viral one
What old paise coins are really worth
Paise coins are the ones people find in a drawer by the dozen, and the ones a “worth lakhs” message most often names. The truth sits in between: many are worth more than their face value, and none is worth what the message says.
Coins of 25 paise and below stopped being legal tender on 30 June 2011, so a collector’s price is all they are worth now; the 50 paise coin is still legal tender. Across 162 recorded sales in our catalogue the middle price runs from about ₹39 to ₹175, depending on the coin and the decade.
What decides the price of a paise coin
Since 30 June 2011 the 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 25 paise coins are no longer money — the Reserve Bank withdrew them — so what a collector pays is the whole of what they are worth. The 50 paise coin is still legal tender, and an ordinary one is worth 50 paise.
What separates one coin from the next is condition, the year and the mint. The same coin worn and unworn can differ several-fold, which is why a middle price from completed sales is a guide, not a promise. A coin that is still sharp, with every letter clear, sells above that middle; one that went through a thousand hands sells below it.
Errors and genuinely scarce years are the exception, and they are what forwarded messages borrow; we have found too few completed sales of those special pieces to quote a range for them. If a message says your ordinary paise coin is worth lakhs, compare it with what the same coin actually sold for below — then ask who is asking you for a fee.

Selling your old paise coins?
A real buyer never asks you for money — not a registration fee, not customs clearance, not GST, not a refundable deposit. Any buyer or “agent” who asks you to pay is running a fraud. Here the whole sale price stays yours: we take no commission on it.
