The most valuable old Indian coins and notes

Most old Indian coins and notes are worth their face value. A small number genuinely sell for more — and here they are, ranked, from 740 completed sales. Not asking prices, and not a guess.

Top of the list: the ₹5 note · Governor Deshmukh at ₹5,100 (8 sales, 4 shops). Yet the typical old coin or note here sold for just ₹99 — even the genuinely old and scarce mostly go for under a hundred rupees.

And the money still in your pocket

Coins and notes still in circulation — ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, however old they look — are worth exactly the value printed on them. Nobody pays lakhs for one.

Coin or note Worth
₹2 note ₹2 (face value)
₹5 coin ₹5 (face value)
₹10 coin ₹10 (face value)
₹10 note ₹10 (face value)
₹100 coin ₹100 (face value)

What is kept off this list

This counts one coin or one note only. Bundles, fancy serial numbers and minting errors are kept out — a bundle's price belongs to the bundle, not to one note — and each has its own page:

How this list is built

Every row has at least 8 completed sales, from 2 or more separate shops, at prices that agree. Asking prices are not counted. And only coins and notes that are genuinely old or out of circulation — a ₹2 coin still spent today never reaches this list, whatever one shop sold a scarce one for.

One test settles every “worth lakhs” claim: a real buyer never asks the seller for money. See what the RBI says and why asking prices mislead.

Think you have one of these?

List it and see what real buyers offer. A real buyer never asks you for money — not a registration fee, not customs clearance, not GST, not a refundable deposit. Any buyer or “agent” who asks you to pay is running a fraud. Here the whole sale price stays yours: we take no commission on it.
