Real value, not the viral one

₹20 note value — is it really ₹3 lakh?

The ₹20 note is the least likely of all of these to be worth anything above face value, and that makes it the most useful page here: if the claim fails on the ₹20, it fails on the same reasoning everywhere else.

The short answer: no.
An ordinary ₹20 note is worth ₹20. It is current legal tender. A small number of early issues carry a collector premium — real ranges below, from our own catalogue.

The ₹20 note in particular

The ₹20 has been in continuous issue since 1972 and was given a new design as recently as 2019. Both are in circulation now, and both are worth twenty rupees.

Scarcity in paper money comes from a short print run, a withdrawn issue, or a note that circulated somewhere it could not easily return from. The ₹20 has none of those. It was printed steadily for fifty years for ordinary daily use.

Our catalogue records fewer sales for this denomination than for any of the other six, and that is itself the finding: dealers list what buyers ask for, and almost nobody asks for a ₹20 note. The handful of early-signature issues that do sell are below.

Notes that do carry a premium

From our published value catalogue — collector ranges for these specific notes, not for an ordinary ₹20 note from a wallet.

One test settles every case: a real buyer never asks the seller for money. See what the RBI says and why asking prices mislead.

What these actually sold for

Completed sales recorded at independent dealers — not asking prices. Each of these is a specific variety of the 20 rupee note.
