₹2 note value — is it really ₹3 lakh?
The ₹2 note stopped being printed in the mid-1990s, which is exactly long enough ago for people to assume it must be scarce, and exactly recent enough that hundreds of millions of them still exist.
An ordinary ₹2 note is worth ₹2. Printing stopped in the 1990s but the note is still legal tender, so it is still worth its face value. Specific varieties carry a collector premium — the completed sales further down show what those actually fetch.
The ₹2 note in particular
What ended in the 1990s was production, not validity. The note remains legal tender; banks simply do not issue one any more. The fraud depends on you not making that distinction, because "no longer printed" sounds a great deal like "no longer available".
Hundreds of millions were printed across the tiger and Aryabhata designs. Something produced at that scale cannot become scarce in thirty years, however rarely you personally see one now.
Where a real premium exists it is in condition and in unbroken sequential bundles, not in a single note from a drawer. We have found too few completed sales of any one special ₹2 issue to quote a range for it, so this page prints none. The completed sales further down record both single notes and bundles, and the gap between them is usually wider than the gap between two denominations.
