₹1 note value — is it really ₹3 lakh?
The ₹1 note is the only Indian banknote signed by the Finance Secretary instead of the RBI Governor, and that one oddity is why it turns up in more "worth lakhs" messages than any other small note.
An ordinary ₹1 note is worth ₹1. It is legal tender, so it is worth what it says on it. A few specific issues carry a genuine collector premium — real ranges below, from our own catalogue.
The ₹1 note in particular
It is issued by the Government of India rather than the Reserve Bank, which is why the signature is different. Printing stopped in 1994 and started again in 2015, so most ₹1 notes people find at home are either more than thirty years old or less than ten, with a long gap in between.
That gap is the grain of truth the claim is built on. A pre-1994 note that has genuinely never been folded is collectable, and the ranges below are what those actually fetch. The same note carried in a wallet is worth one rupee.
The ₹1 notes that are genuinely rare are the wartime overprints issued for use outside India — the 1945 Burma overprint below is one of them. They are rare because of where they circulated, not because of anything in the serial number.
